What is Handball?

Handball is a team sport played by two teams with the objective of scoring goals into the opponent's net. In the most commonly used indoor format, each team consists of seven players: six field players and one goalkeeper.

Players move the ball using their hands through passing, catching, dribbling, and throwing towards the opponent's goal. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins.

In this sport, players are not allowed to carry the ball while running indefinitely. They are only allowed a maximum of three steps before they must dribble the ball, pass it to a teammate, or shoot at the goal.

Matches are played on a court approximately 40 × 20 meters with goals at both ends of the court. In front of each goal, there is a goalkeeper's area 6 meters away that only the goalkeeper may enter, except under specific conditions according to the game rules.

Handball combines speed, strength, agility, throwing accuracy, and strategy in every attack and defense. Because of its very fast pace, this sport is suitable for those who enjoy dynamic, competitive, and action-packed team games.

History of Handball Through the Ages

1. The Beginning of Handball

Games resembling handball have been known in several European regions since the 19th century. Various forms of throwing and catching games using hands were the precursors to modern handball.

The development of this sport became more structured thanks to the contributions of Danish physical education teacher, Holger Nielsen. In 1906, he compiled a set of handball rules in Ordrup, Denmark, which became one of the foundations for the sport's development.

A few years later, German physical education teacher, Max Heiser, developed new rules in 1917 in Berlin, Germany. These rules were then refined by Karl Schelenz and Erich Konigh, becoming the foundation of this modern sport as it is known today.

2. Development of Modern Handball

In its early development, this sport was played on open fields or field handball with 11 players on each team. The court size was almost similar to a football field, requiring a larger playing area.

The field handball format became more known when it was contested at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Germany. Although it attracted attention, this format was considered less practical due to its heavy reliance on weather and field conditions.

Over time, the indoor handball format with seven players became the primary choice because it was faster and more dynamic. This sport officially returned as an Olympic sport at Munich 1972 for men, while the women's event began to be contested at Montreal 1976.

3. Establishment of the International Handball Federation

The development of this sport in various countries led to the formation of an international organization to govern it. Therefore, the International Handball Federation (IHF) was officially established on July 11, 1946, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

At its inception, the IHF was formed by eight founding countries: Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland. This organization then became the official body that compiles game rules and organizes international competitions.

Currently, the IHF oversees more than 200 national federations from various countries. In addition to indoor handball, the organization also develops beach handball and wheelchair handball to make this sport more inclusive and global.

4. Development of Handball in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the development of this sport is under the auspices of the Indonesian Handball Association (ABTI), established on August 16, 2007. This organization is responsible for developing athlete training, competitions, and introducing this modern sport to the public.

Since its establishment, ABTI has actively formed provincial boards and organized various championships for students, university students, and national levels. These steps aim to expand participation and produce athletes capable of competing at an international level.

Its popularity further increased after it was officially contested at the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) in 2021. Although not yet as popular as football or basketball, the number of handball communities, clubs, and athlete development programs in Indonesia continues to grow every year.

Benefits of Handball for Health

Handball provides benefits for physical fitness as well as thinking skills during play. This activity also helps improve coordination, teamwork, and decision-making skills. Here are its benefits:

  1. Enhances Physical Fitness: Movements such as running, jumping, and quickly changing direction help increase stamina, agility, strength, and body endurance.
  2. Trains Hand-Eye Coordination: Players must catch, pass, and throw the ball accurately while constantly moving. This training helps improve coordination, reflexes, and ball control.
  3. Develops Teamwork: Each player needs to communicate, share positions, and support each other during offense and defense. Good cooperation makes the game more effective.
  4. Trains Decision Making: The fast pace of the game requires players to make decisions quickly. The ability to choose when to pass, dribble, or shoot will continue to develop through practice.

What Makes Handball Unique?

1. Fast-Paced Game with High Intensity

Handball is known as a sport with a very fast pace. The transition from defense to offense can happen in just a few seconds.

Teams that win the ball usually initiate a fast break immediately before the opponent's defense is formed. This strategy creates scoring opportunities more quickly.

Therefore, players must have good stamina, focus, and reflexes. The ability to make quick decisions is also crucial during a match.

2. Combination of Throwing, Catching, and Jumping Techniques

Handball combines passing, catching, dribbling, and shooting techniques in every game. All these techniques must be mastered for attacks to be effective.

One of its characteristic techniques is the jump shot, which involves releasing a shot while jumping. This technique helps players get a better shooting angle.

In addition to strength, accuracy and timing are also very important. Well-aimed throws have a higher chance of resulting in a goal.

3. Dynamic Attack and Defense Strategies

Handball prioritizes teamwork and strategy. Players must create space through quick passes and off-ball movements.

When defending, players work together to close passing lanes and block opponent's shots. Good coordination makes the defense more solid.

Strategies can change according to the flow of the game. Teams can adjust the tempo and playing patterns to face opponents.

4. Differences from Other Large Ball Games

Handball uses hands to control the ball and a goal as the target for scoring. This differs from futsal and football, which rely more on feet.

Compared to basketball, this sport also uses passing, dribbling, and shooting. The difference is that handball uses a goal, while basketball uses a hoop.

Another unique feature is the 6-meter goalkeeper's area, which is characteristic of the game. Players can also jump and shoot before landing to create scoring opportunities.
